IPS or In Plane Switching has been the trend lately with PLS still taking off IPS is now in its second gen. With the only real second gen IPS monitor being the AOC I2276VWM IPS second gen may still not be the thing but even IPS 1st gen monitors like the ROG Swift which is one of the best monitors on the market for gaming and even though IPS is known for being slow the Swift from Asus is really swift with just 1ms response time and input lag it may just be one of the fastest monitors on earth.
IPS has it's own ups and downs first let's start with the ups, IPS is very good in color reproduction and color density and then IPS has great viewing angles plus it has full 10-bit color capabilities and IPS panels also support more than the standard for TN in color quantities which for TN is just 16.8 million where as IPS and PLS supports upto (Currently)1 Billion.
And last but not least IPS supports Fliker Free {Flikr Free(As Marketed)} images which is not supported in TN.
In this image we can see that the TN on the right is very oversaturated but the IPS on the left is delivering superior colors.
And now to the downs of the IPS Panels.
As we spoke earlier IPS panels are slow and slow isn't good for gamer's and other enthusiasts.
And then IPS images tend to compare with TN panels and win the quality awards but loose the biggest thing which is the customer satisfaction. Now this happens because IPS panels always have the price increment over TN but when actually calculating you either get a fast ugly image display or a slow nice image diplay. It seems one to one!
So if we want conclusions for mobiles - IPS,PLS or AMOLED and SAMOLED
for TVs-IPS, PLS
for Workstation Grade Monitors-IPS or PLS
for Gaming Monitors - IPS or PLS :should be fast (for enthusiasts) or TN-For Budget Gamers
Gaming may also change by personal preference too!
So then there you have it IPS is a really good improvement over TN and really challenges other great display modes like AMOLED and SAMOLED which makes IPS one of the best Display Technologies ever.
